Celebrate International Volunteer Day 2010!

The tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers provides us the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the will, positive energy and innovation of millions of people for human development and human rights through a multitude of volunteering initiatives from locally initiated activities to structured full-time engagements.

IYV+10 will highlight the great diversity of volunteers of all ages, origins, cultures, socio-economic backgrounds and experiences.

International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development (IVD) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 40/212 on 17 December 1985. Since then, governments, the UN system and civil society organizations have successfully joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the Day on 5 December. IVD provides an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to work together in projects and campaigns bringing added visibility to their contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels. Over the years, rallies, parades, community volunteering projects, environmental awareness, free medical care and speeches by high-ranking government officials has all featured prominently on IVD. Written by Administrator Saturday, 11 September 2010 00:00 In 1997, the UN General Assembly, convinced that the need for volunteer effort was greater than ever and that a year designed to enhance the recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of volunteer service could make a significant contribution to generating increased awareness of the achievements and further potential of volunteerism, proclaimed 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers - or 'IYV'. To consolidate successes attained and build on the momentum created by the International Year of Volunteers, the General Assembly called for the marking of IYV+10 in 2011.
